The hard-to-abate industry is one of the most challenging industries to decarbonize. Due to the high temperature involved in such processes, electrification is not a solution in the short/medium period. Therefore, the use of no carbon fuels is the viable path to make the sector meet the requirements of net-zero CO2 emission. In this framework, ammonia can play a relevant role in many industries. It has been showed that there are several efforts and different approaches that are in play to face the critical points that hinder a fast deployment of ammonia as energy carrier on a large scale. Though many steps have to be still done, it has been demonstrated that ammonia can be burnt in an efficient way with relatively low pollutant emissions if appropriate strategies are used, meeting the requirement of energy-intensive industries. If the required amount of green ammonia will be available, it has great potential to be among the most relevant carriers beyond energy transition.
