At present, most studies have focused on the pyrolysis of the three main components of lignocellulosic biomass: hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin. However, aquatic plants and algae (e.g. brown algae) and some agricultural wastes also contain large amounts of acidic polysaccharides that can be converted into useful chemicals and fuels through biochemical and thermochemical processes.
