The paper is focused on the theme of the reuse of public architectural heritage through two eloquent experiences, intimatelyconnected to each other, concerning the monumental Complex of San Michele a Ripa Grande in Rome and the Reale Albergo dei Poveri inNaples. Both structures, for their dimensions and architectural language, mark the surrounding urban fabric, forming powerful examples ofthe architecture of Enlightenment designed to fulfill public and social functions.
