KIWIFRUIT DECAY: EPIDEMIOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AND POLLARD PRACTICES The decay of kiwifruit is a wood disease recently observed in Emilia Romagna. The incidence of the disease increased in these last years, causing yield loss, shortened productive life of vineyards and plant dying. In 2003, the presence of the disease was monitored in 100 kiwifruit "Hayward" vineyards, located in a kiwifruit growing area of Emilia Romagna, near Faenza. Further epidemiological investigations were carried out over a period of 3-4 years: 11 vineyards were surveyed recording each year vines showing symptoms of the decay; one more vineyard was weekly examined assessing for each shoot of each vine the appearance and the development of the disease. Moreover, trials on the effectiveness of trunk renewal of diseased plants on growth resumption, production, and appearance of decay symptoms were carried out in 3 vineyards for some years. Some relevant results are reported and discussed. Keywords: decay of kiwifruit, epidemiological survey, trunk renewal
