Starting from Giovanni Paoletti’s recent book, Passioni del tempo. Origine della religione e utilità della storia da Hobbes a Hume, this article aims to discuss the emergence of the concept of history in the modern age through criticism of religion and the discussion of the passions of hope and fear. The article thus aims to consider the relationship between anthropology and history, highlighting Vico’s position as a strong driving force for the emergence of a fully historical consciousness.
