The objective of this paper is to underline how the integration of ports within supply chains can contribute not only to improving the performance of all port actors (according to the Supply Chain Management approach) but also can represent a tool for local economic development. To this end, after a review of the literature on this topic, some conditions are discussed under which ports can proactively react to external environmental changes. Some brief considerations are finally developed with reference to the port of Naples.
