A numerical model is applied to test the effectiveness of Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) in the remediation of a site polluted by hydrocarbons. SVE is one of the most frequent techniques used for the remediation of the vadose zones contaminated by hydrocarbons. In the case studied a hypothetical BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes, Ethyl benzene) and TPH (Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons) contamination has been considered. The concentrations of pollutants in subsoil, sited near Brindisi, have been considered equal to those measured at Porto Marghera (GE) site. This application aimed to examine some economic features of the SVE technique, as well as to point out the very important role of mathematical models in management of contaminated sites. A computational code based upon multiphase flow and transport equations, has been used to predict contaminants depletion trends and estimate remediation times. The simulations outputs have pointed out different remediation performances for BTEX (more than 150 days) and TPH (more than 600 days) removal.
