Tools for predicting the energy consumption of supermarket refrigeration systems and their single compo-nents are increasingly used to assess different installation options. This is a report on the preliminary results of a comparison drawn between the heat extraction rate of a vertical open display cabinet actually measured at a supermarket and the corresponding values obtained by a model for simulating the cabinet's operation. The supermarket's refrigeration system is being monitored, recording the data obtained by an ad hoc measur-ing system and by all the controllers installed in the single components of the system. The values of 322 physical quantities will be recorded at one-minute intervals for a whole year. The model for simulating the cabinet was developed using the TRNSYS-16 because of the flexibility afforded by this software. Record-ings obtained during the first 10 weeks of monitoring indicate that the model produces results fairly con-sistent with the values measured in the field.
