We characterize the region in orbital elements space containing collisions solutions of a small body with a planet, in the framework of the analytical theory of close encounters. This allows us to derive an analytical estimate of the probability of collision somewhat different from the well-known one given by Opik.

Abstract

We characterize the region in orbital elements space containing collisions solutions of a small body with a planet, in the framework of the analytical theory of close encounters. This allows us to derive an analytical estimate of the probability of collision somewhat different from the well-known one given by Opik.
