Semantic relations play a prominent role and have considerable expressive power in the SIMPLE model. Yet, some conceptual links are still too vaguely expressed or not even captured through lack of appropriate representational vocabulary. In this paper, the relations that were added to the Extended Qualia Structure in the framework of the CLIPS project are first illustrated. Then, a proposal is made to further enrich the relation network by borrowing from the EuroWordNet model some conceptual links holding between events and their participants and among co-participants in events, with a view to enhancing the understanding of the relationships among word senses in a sentence.

Abstract

Semantic relations play a prominent role and have considerable expressive power in the SIMPLE model. Yet, some conceptual links are still too vaguely expressed or not even captured through lack of appropriate representational vocabulary. In this paper, the relations that were added to the Extended Qualia Structure in the framework of the CLIPS project are first illustrated. Then, a proposal is made to further enrich the relation network by borrowing from the EuroWordNet model some conceptual links holding between events and their participants and among co-participants in events, with a view to enhancing the understanding of the relationships among word senses in a sentence.
