A genetic algorithm (GA) has been optimized for modeling rare earth doped amplifiers and lasers. The key routines, pertaining to the cross-over, selection, mutation and elitism procedures, have been accurately refined. The numerical code can be successfully applied to charactere active optical waveguides, too. As an example, the design of a microstructured erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is described in detail.
