With the restoration work on the Basilica of the Santa Croce (Lecce), there was a spurt of activity in the field of restoration of historical buildings in Apulia (Italy) from the 1980s. This development underlined the need for a better understanding of the products used in the consolidation and protection treatments. However, the experiments carried out, and studies made, did not often deal with the stone materials used in Apulian monuments, apart from a few in “Lecce stone”. A research programme into conservation products has been set up in the hope of filling this gap, with laboratory experiments and outdoor ones on exposed walls, as well as a collection of documents containing data on work carried out over the last ten years and an examination in situ of the state of the buildings.
