Our results demonstrate that compound 3 (3,3’, 5,5’-tetrabromo-2,2’ biphenyldiol) is, among the others biphenyl hydroxilated derivatives tested, a potent, and selective modulator of the GABAA receptor function and may act on a site different from benzodiazepine recognition site, given that the potentiation of the GABAA receptor is not affected by the benzodiazepine receptor antagonist flumazenil. Behavioural experiments are needed to define the pharmacological profile of this compound.
