Urban regeneration in Belfast: Europe that looks ahead' is a project led by an international teamand aimed to identify, through acritical reflection on urban transformations in Belfast between insiders and outsiders, possible approaches to sustainable urban regeneration in contested places, also applicable to other European contexts. It includes contributions from international experts, that have worked together on the Belfast transformation experiences, thus representing a systematic reflections on the role of urband esign and planning in Belfast and promoting the dissemination of those experiences. In fifteen years Belfast has completely changed, being able to exploit abandoned resources, like the riverfront, to retrieve contaminated and brownfield sites, identifying new activities and new markets, re-interpreting the public-private partnership, promoting participation.
L'articolo apre una sezione curata dalle autrici che affronta a tutto tondo il caso studio di Belfast (UK). L'idea di accendere i riflettori su una città non (ancora) così nota al pubblico italiano nasce dalla constatazione di un'evidenza empirica: nonostante il grave fardello del passato, che pesa ancora oggi sulla capitale del nord Irlanda Belfast può essere considerata un prezioso laboratorio per il progetto urbanistico contemporaneo, sia per la qualità delle trasformazioni più recenti, già concluse, sia per il carattere innovativo di quelle in corso di attivazione o completamento in diverse aree chiave della città.
