Le foreste difendono il pianeta dai gas serra: ma l uomo deve aiutarle

In the global carbon cycle there is more and more evidence of the importance of forests. In fact, if they represent about 30% of emerged lands, the carbon contained in these ecosystems makes up for 80% of the aboveground carbon and 40% of the belowground carbon. Forests are responsible for 60-70% of the main productivity of all the ecosystems on the earth and, in these last 30 years they have absorbed 20 to 30% of greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities. This confirms the importance of their role in the global biogeochemical carbon cycle especially with reference to carbon emission increase in the atmosphere and to climate changes currently under way.

Crescenti sono le evidenze che assegnano al comparto forestale un ruolo significativo nel ciclo globale del carbonio. Infatti, se le foreste occupano circa il 30% delle terre emerse, il carbonio contenuto in questi ecosistemi rappresenta l'80% del carbonio epigeo totale ed il 40% di quello ipogeo. Esse sono responsabili del 60-70% della produttività primaria di tutti gli ecosistemi terrestri e, negli ultimi 30 anni hanno assorbito tra il 20 ed il 30% delle emissioni di gas serra causate dalle attività umane. Questo conferma l'importanza del ruolo delle foreste nel ciclo biogeochimico globale del carbonio anche nel quadro delle crescenti emissioni di carbonio nell'atmosfera e dei cambiamenti climatici in atto.
