In this paper we present the basic ideas un- derlying a solution for software application interoperabil- ity in a business context. Key elements of our solution are a Reference Ontology, aimed at modelling the key aspects of a business domain, and a Semantic Annotation Lan- guage, SMAIL, used to associate semantic expressions, defined in terms of the reference ontology, to business elements.
