The electronic properties of F&Cd, _xCr,X, (X = S, Se) spine1 solid solutions have been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of anionic as well as cationic substitution on the electronic structure of the chromium ions is discussed and compared with previous results on the corresponding oxy-spinels.
