Abstract

The planning and the building of an institution typologically comparable to moderns hospitals, i.e. exclusively devoted to the clinical treatment of patients, to the education of medical students and to medicine development, represented, both medically and architecturally, a great achievement of the medical Islamic society. According to the majority of the historians, the first true Islamic hospital was built in about the 8th century during the reign of Harun al Rashid, the vizier of Baghdad. After this, a large number of hospitals sprung up throughout the Islamic world during the Middle Age. Generally these hospitals consisted of specialized wards dealing with different diseases. Some hospitals frequently had special places for patients affected by mental disease. Drugs, massages, bloodletting as well as musicotherapy and ergotherapy were used. In this paper the most famous Moroccan and Syrian bimaristans in which mental illnesses were treated have been considered.
