Abstract: The 5th International Conference on Borate Glasses, Crystals, and Melts was held 10-14 July 2005 at Conference Center Panorama of University of Trento, Italy. This meeting followed others at Cedar Rapids (USA, 2002), Sophia (Bulgaria, 1999), Abingdon (UK, 1996), and Alfred (New York, USA, 1977). The meeting honored Prof. Werner Vogel, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the science of glasses and to his distinguished career in scientific research. The Conference focused on new techniques in the study of the structure and properties of borate glasses, crystals and melts, as well as their practical applications. Eighty nine scientists and students from 18 nations gathered together for 10 topical sessions on: High Temperature (preparation and characterization), Spectroscopies and Local Structure, Applications (glass fibers, optical properties, energy storage, imaging, biocompatibility, others), Glass properties, AgI-containing glasses, Structure and Modeling, Phase separation and thermal expansion, Anomalies in thermal expansion, Thermodynamics and glass properties, Local Boron environment: XAFS and EELS. Forty eight oral presentations and forty five Poster contributions were presented. Key issues that emerged at this conference will be reviewed in this summary talk.
