The results of five years of activities aimed at setting up a grass pea (Lathyrus spp.) core collection and at selection of useful genotypes for direct use and/or breeding purposes are reported. Based on passport data with plant and seed biometric and biochemical data, a core collection of 47 accessions was defined by multivariate analysis (principal components and cluster analysis). Molecular analyses (RAPD and AFLP) were then performed in order to get additional information about the genetic similarity and the interrelations of different markers. The method was very useful to identify superior genotypes
