This paper summarises the activity developed at CE.RI.S.E.P.-C.N.R. (Research Centre of Electrical Power Systems of the National Research Council) about the application of Least-Squares techniques to the on-line and off-line identification of induction motors. In particular it describes some guidelines for proper use of Ordinary Least-Squares (OLS) for on-line estimation of electrical parameters in induction motors supplied either by the grid or by a power converter in high performance adjustable speed drives. In addition it shows the application of OLS to the estimation of the electrical parameters of the induction motor at stand-still. Finally it describes the employment of a novel neuron, the TLS EXIN neuron, to the on-line estimation of the electrical parameters of the induction motor, especially in noisy environments, which is proved both theoretically and numerically. Some guidelines are also given for a proper application of Least-Squares techniques to the different cases.
