The complex dynamics of the debris clouds generated by the Iridium 33 - Cosmos 2251 collision is investigated. The risk of impact between the clouds and the constellation satellites located on the different orbital planes and the possibility of performing an advances collision avoidance are studied by means of the "nodal distance" (MOID) concept, applied for the first time to space debris studies.

Abstract

The complex dynamics of the debris clouds generated by the Iridium 33 - Cosmos 2251 collision is investigated. The risk of impact between the clouds and the constellation satellites located on the different orbital planes and the possibility of performing an advances collision avoidance are studied by means of the "nodal distance" (MOID) concept, applied for the first time to space debris studies.
