The phase of urbanization we shall describe in this chapter marks the passage from the traditional world, where cities were islands in the sea of the traditional agrarian system, to the modern world, where cities have a pervasive influence on any feature of social and economic life. After an examination of European urban geography, we shall trace the passage from the old to modern urbanization, and examine the relationship between these changes in urban systems, on one hand, andthebeginningofmoderngrowth, on the other.
