The architecture of a digital library service system strongly influences its capabilities. In this paper we report our experience with the OpenDLib system, which is based on a service-oriented architecture, and we describe how, in the attempt to better satisfy the user requirements, we decided to develop a digital library service-oriented infrastructure on Grid. We also briefly introduce this infrastructure and present the open issues related to its development.
