In this chapter we characterise algebra in the intermediate school, emphasise what determines the conceptual break with arithmetic and analyse if these features can be introduced by using a spreadsheet, focusing in particular on the elements to be taught and learned. Our discussion shows that, though with some limitations, the spreadsheet can be useful to introduce algebra and it can be a good starting point to compare different solving approaches.

Abstract
In this chapter we characterise algebra in the intermediate school, emphasise what determines the conceptual break with arithmetic and analyse if these features can be introduced by using a spreadsheet, focusing in particular on the elements to be taught and learned. Our discussion shows that, though with some limitations, the spreadsheet can be useful to introduce algebra and it can be a good starting point to compare different solving approaches.File in questo prodotto:
