Lazio is an italian region with great variety of natural environments. However, the changes in the land use, which occurred during the past decades, resulted in the disappearance of several local crop ecotypes and are exposing the ones still in cultivation to a high risk of genetic erosion. This paper presents an overview of the current occurence of legume agro-ecotypes in the region. Some of the 25 ecotypes considered in this study can clearly exemplify the problems related to the on farm survival of autochthonous germplasm.

Abstract

Lazio is an italian region with great variety of natural environments. However, the changes in the land use, which occurred during the past decades, resulted in the disappearance of several local crop ecotypes and are exposing the ones still in cultivation to a high risk of genetic erosion. This paper presents an overview of the current occurence of legume agro-ecotypes in the region. Some of the 25 ecotypes considered in this study can clearly exemplify the problems related to the on farm survival of autochthonous germplasm.
