This paper proposes a condition-based maintenance policy for deteriorating units that fail when the degradation level exceeds a threshold limit. The failure, however, does not produce a sudden break down of the unit and its occurrence can be detected only at inspections to which the units are subject. A decision rule is proposed to choose the maintenance action to be taken, given the state of the unit at the inspection. An application referred to real wearing data of marine engines cylinder liners is illustrated, with the further aim of highlighting the need of correctly model the degradation process.

Abstract

This paper proposes a condition-based maintenance policy for deteriorating units that fail when the degradation level exceeds a threshold limit. The failure, however, does not produce a sudden break down of the unit and its occurrence can be detected only at inspections to which the units are subject. A decision rule is proposed to choose the maintenance action to be taken, given the state of the unit at the inspection. An application referred to real wearing data of marine engines cylinder liners is illustrated, with the further aim of highlighting the need of correctly model the degradation process.
