Studies in the rape casting of thr ee different commercial AlN powders are described. Green properties of tape cast material are compared in terms of density, homogeneity, and smoothness, and their relationships with the composition and viscosity of the slurry before casting are evaluated. The effect of debonding atmosphere (argon or air) and of sintering conditions on the final properties: density, microstructure, and grain boundary phases, are considered. The thermal conductivity of sintered samples is related to the microstructure and to the properties of the starting powders
