EIS measurements were used to evaluate the corrosion performance of AISI 304 stainless steel when covered by different metal oxide layers. In particular, polycrystalline chromia, hafnia and amorphous alumina both as single layers and in some bi-layer systems, were deposited via MOCVD technique and tested in a very aggressive test solution (aerated 0.5 M HCl at 20°C ). While best performance were obtained for chromia even at long immersion time (120h), the bi-layer system alumina + chromia behaved well only until 24 h.
