The convective flow generated in a rectangular vessel by a linear source has been studied by means of two spectral decompositions: Proper Orthogonal Decomposition and Fourier Decomposition. The velocity field was measured by Particle Tracking Velocimetry, an optical techniques that furnishes the time evolution of the velocity vectors on a regularly spaced grid. The former decomposition is based on the computation of an empirical orthonormal basis from the given data set whereas the latter uses the discretisation of a set of harmonic functions. The effectiveness of the methods, for the present data-set, was compared and their field of application is discussed.
