We have measured the integrated intensity of the double rotovibrational transition Q(1)(0)+S-0(0) in solid hydrogen at different densities and temperatures. The experimental results are compared with numerical calculations based on a quantum mechanical pair distribution function and on a simple quadrupole-quadrupole interaction model for the anisotropic component of the intermolecular potential. The comparison shows the insufficiency of that model but indicates that double transition spectra are a valuable source of information for intermolecular interactions.

Abstract

We have measured the integrated intensity of the double rotovibrational transition Q(1)(0)+S-0(0) in solid hydrogen at different densities and temperatures. The experimental results are compared with numerical calculations based on a quantum mechanical pair distribution function and on a simple quadrupole-quadrupole interaction model for the anisotropic component of the intermolecular potential. The comparison shows the insufficiency of that model but indicates that double transition spectra are a valuable source of information for intermolecular interactions.
