Abstract

Taking cue from some observations pointed out by J. Corominas, G. Rohlfs, H.W. Klein and other authors about the Romance reflexes of Latin quaer?re, the paper shows the results of the reconstruction of Protoromance */'ku?r-e-/, that is the subject of an article of the Dictionnaire Étymologique Roman. The set of Romance words representing the common heritage of this etymological base displays particular developments in terms of morphology and semantics, which are highlighted by the methods of comparative grammar. Inter alia, the comparison between the Romance issues allow to observe that some semantic shifts, whose development is already inferable in late Latin texts for the verbe quaer?re, are suitable to be reported to the common etymon in spoken Latin, before the differentiation of Romance languages from one another. Therefore, the article shows how DÉRomcan make original contributions to the study of Romance etymology.
