The DAHFNE project - standardization of Diagnostic Approach in Heart Failure with Normal Ejection fraction - is aimed at developing a system for the quality control in echocardiography to be linked to the programs of External Quality Assessment (EQA) for cardiac markers and natriuretic peptides. Diagnosis and management of heart failure patients, besides clinical signs, is based on circulating biomarkers and imaging techniques, foremost echocardiography. The aim of the project is the definition of procedures for intra- and inter-laboratory quality control of biochemical measures and echocardiographic studies. In order to promote this activity, a web-based tool for e-training, available on PC, tablet and smartphone, was developed whereby participants can perform assessments of echocardiographic studies, comparing their own interpretations with those obtained by other participants. The tool is designed to improve participants' skills in interpreting the echocardiographic images through the evaluation, over time, of real clinical cases. Quantitative measures (thicknesses, diameters, volumes, gradients etc.) and qualitative interpretations (evaluation of LV or RV function, regional function) are required to the participants by on-line periodic exercises. The project, carried on by QualiMedLab s.r.l. and CNR - Institute of Clinical Physiology, is funded by the Tuscany Region with the program POR CREO FESR 2007-2013.
