The behaviour of turbulent flow close to a free--surface is an interesting topic in fluid dynamics and specifically in the field of naval hydrodynamics. Such situations are present both in the wake of a ship hull and in the juncture between the side wall of the hull and the free--surface. As previously noted the presence of a free--boundary has a strong influence on the turbulent structures. In the present paper the flow in the corner formed by a wall and a free--surface is analysed and the effects of the free--boundary are studied by comparison with the corner flow between two solid walls. Physically, such situation is modelled by a duct bounded by three no--slip walls and a free-surface on the top. Periodic boundary condition is enforced in stream wise direction. The free-surface is modelled as a rigid lid.
