We studied, with optical methods, the dynamics of the shock wave resulting from the interaction of a focused pulsed laser beam with a metallic surface. The laws of propagation of the shock wave, inside and outside the laser-produced crater, are derived and compared with the results of numerical simulation. The implications of these results for in-depth laser spectroscopic analysis of metallic samples are discussed.
