The Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) is rather ambitious as it brings together all of the problems of hunger, food security and sustainable agriculture (see introductory chapter). The fundamental aim of SDG 2 is the doubling of agricultural productivity within 2030 by implementing sustainable agriculture approaches. This is the consequence of high global policy demands and it parallels other similar policy requests and emerging concepts such as Sustainable Intensifi cation (FAO Strategic Objective) and Climate-smart agriculture (Lipper et al. 2014). Regardless of the specific type of conceptualization, the widespread demand for a combining and balancing of both increasing crop productivity and environmental protection is self-evident.
