The paper focuses on a precise moment in history, when artistic photography and aerial photogra- phy coincided. The goal is to analyse the first attempts at urban aerial photography performed with a daguerreotype from a balloon or other rudimentary flying machines. Italian progress is compared with achievements in Europe, and aerial views of our cities prior to World War I are presented thanks to images sourced from public and private archives.
