The contribution aims to propose some reflections on the funerary ideologies of the Etruscans, with specific reference to the period between the 9th and the 5th centuries BC. Ritual practices of inhumation and cremation, together with the relative solutions adopted to safeguard the dead’s remains in their passage into the afterlife, will be compared. Among the various examples, the article will consider the cases in which the cinerary urns with anthropo- morphic characteristics were used: they substituted in some way the body of the deceased after his final metamorphosis.

Abstract

The contribution aims to propose some reflections on the funerary ideologies of the Etruscans, with specific reference to the period between the 9th and the 5th centuries BC. Ritual practices of inhumation and cremation, together with the relative solutions adopted to safeguard the dead’s remains in their passage into the afterlife, will be compared. Among the various examples, the article will consider the cases in which the cinerary urns with anthropo- morphic characteristics were used: they substituted in some way the body of the deceased after his final metamorphosis.
