The lateral premotor cortex is formed by four distinct areas: F2, F4, F5, and F7. F4 and F5 are often collectively indicated as the ventral premotor cortex, whereas F2 and F7 are referred to as the dorsal premotor cortex. We first review the functional properties of the premotor areas of the monkey. Particular emphasis is given to area F5 because of its role in cognitive functions. We then examine the anatomical homologies between monkey and human premotor regions. We conclude by reviewing functional data on the organization of human premotor region by relating them to the organization of the homologous region of the monkey. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
