Since the Early Iron Age (10th-8th century BC) and up to the Roman conquest (3rd century BC), Daunian people buried their dead in a crouched position on their side. However, there are cases of different funerary rituals, like cremation found in very rare circumstances, but above all the semi-cremation. e documentation collected allows us to establish that this was a practice reserved exclusively for leading members of some aristocratic groups at the top of the community. e aim of this contribution, therefore, is to codify the behaviors linked to these rituals, to analyze the deep underlying symbolic values and above all to propose some reflections about the reconstruction of the social identity of the deceased in a new dimension through the arrangement of the artifacts related to the funerary assemblages.

Abstract
Since the Early Iron Age (10th-8th century BC) and up to the Roman conquest (3rd century BC), Daunian people buried their dead in a crouched position on their side. However, there are cases of different funerary rituals, like cremation found in very rare circumstances, but above all the semi-cremation. e documentation collected allows us to establish that this was a practice reserved exclusively for leading members of some aristocratic groups at the top of the community. e aim of this contribution, therefore, is to codify the behaviors linked to these rituals, to analyze the deep underlying symbolic values and above all to propose some reflections about the reconstruction of the social identity of the deceased in a new dimension through the arrangement of the artifacts related to the funerary assemblages.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
