This article explores the development of linguistics in Eastern Europe in the twentieth century by examining the major centers of linguistic innovation: Saint Petersburg (then Leningrad), Moscow, Prague, and the Polish cities of Warsaw and Krakow. Each city is associated with one or more major founding figures. The article also highlights the younger generations that attempted to innovate their ideas by incorporating and elaborating inputs from other traditions.
