PERSPECTIVE: A NEW PROJECT DEDICATED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYTICAL STRATEGIES FOR THE KNOWLEDGE AND PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION OF PLASTIC OBJECTS The recently funded national project PERSPECTIVE (PolymEr Research Studies for PreventivE Conservation Through non invasIVe analytical strategiEs) is presented. Aim of the project is to optimize analytical multimodal non-invasive approaches for the in-situ study of synthetic polymers and plastic materials. Consolidated, robust analytical micro destructive methods will be the foundations of the newly developed non-invasive approaches that will focus on: – the study of synthetic polymers and plastics in cultural heritage going beyond the plastic identification but providing a quantitative determination of the components. We intend to push forward the analytical strengths of non-invasive approaches as unique valuable tools for plastic characterization, for understanding how they respond to specific environmental conditions and how they can be conserved; – monitoring in real time conservation interventions. Appropriate conservation treatments can be optimized by the analytical monitoring of both chemical and mechanical changes.
