In this paper my purpose is to reflect on the meaning of the term distance when distance education is used for learning aims. In particular, I will discuss the importance of recognizing different typologies of distance in order to achieve an effective correspondence between the “skills” technology is expected to provide and the functions it is really capable of. I will then describe a model of formative evaluation which I have called Symptoms Assessment Procedure (SAP) with which to verify the readiness of technology in terms of skilled procedures to empower learning. In the conclusions I will set out some ideas for implementing new opportunities in distance learning.

Abstract

In this paper my purpose is to reflect on the meaning of the term distance when distance education is used for learning aims. In particular, I will discuss the importance of recognizing different typologies of distance in order to achieve an effective correspondence between the “skills” technology is expected to provide and the functions it is really capable of. I will then describe a model of formative evaluation which I have called Symptoms Assessment Procedure (SAP) with which to verify the readiness of technology in terms of skilled procedures to empower learning. In the conclusions I will set out some ideas for implementing new opportunities in distance learning.
