Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) are produced at very early stage of tomato-Meloidogyne incognita incompatible interaction. The oxidative burst is generated as the parasite is perceived as invader by the plant. Signalling responses to ROS and NO include the up- and downregulation of gene expression, leading to localised cell death, characteristic of the hypersensitive response. These results imply the presence in tomato plants of a complex and coordinated signal network triggered in response to nematode infection.
