We investigate the experimental study and the numerical simulation of the response of an assembly of grains to an applied shear stress. The friction laws observed for variable layer depth are investigated, and quantities not accessible experimentally are evaluated by molecular dynamics. Recent results on the friction laws observed during irregular stick-slip motion are discussed.

Abstract
