The food system in Burkina Faso is insufficiently diversified to ensure the food, nutritional, and health security of its population, and its reliance on imports of food products exposes it to vulnerability. Yet, the country has neglected and underutilised species having the potential to diversify and improve the livelihoods of its population. This study provides information on the potential of the value chains of several crops: amaranth, moringa, roselle, Bambara groundnut, and sweet potato. Specifically, the study seeks (i) to describe the value chains of the main raw and processed products of each crop and (ii) to assess the financial performance of these products. A total of 247 actors involved in the production, processing, and marketing of these products were surveyed, within a 100 km radius around Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. The results reveal several value chains stages predominantly led by women, as in the case of amaranth and roselle. Average annual auto consumption of their own production at farmers level varies between 9 and 49%. For the producers, the contribution of these products ranges from 13% to 42% of the national poverty threshold. Net profit margins are above 50% for all producers, and for processors in the amaranth, roselle, and Bambara groundnut value chains. These crops can therefore contribute to food diversification and to improving the incomes of the actors involved.
