Abstract: Little research-based information is available on artichoke (Cynara cardunculus L. subsp. scolymus Hayek) genetic variability achieved by biochemical and molecular markers. Studies on artichoke cultivars characterization by achene proteins analysis are unknown. The pattern of achene proteins, assessed by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), can be utilized as marker in open pollinated (OP) cultivars characterization as well as in the identification and genetic purity checking of hybrids.
