Myrtle(Myrtus communisL.)isanaromaticplantspontaneouslygrowingandincreasinglycultivatedinMediterraneanarea.Recently,interestonmyrtleplantisgrowingduetothepharmacologicalandantioxidantpropertiessincemyrtleleavesareimportantsourcesofphenolicandantioxidantcompoundswithhealth-promotingeffects.Plantgenotypeistheprimaryfactoraffectingantioxidantactivityandphenolcontent.Forthisreason,acorecollectionoflocalselectedmyrtleaccessionsfromSicilywasevaluatedwiththeaimtoidentifygenotypeswithhighantioxidantvalue.Thirty-sixmyrtleindividualsbelongingtosevenpopulationswerestudiedforleaftotalphenols,tanninsandantioxidantactivity.Resultsofquantitativedeterminationoftotalphenols,tanninsandantioxidantactivitymeasuredwithtwoprotocols(DPPHandABTSradicalscavengingactivity)revealedahighvariabilityofmyrtlegenotypesfortheseparameters.LeavesoftheaccessionMTR11belongingtoScopellopopulationhadthehighesttotalphenolcontentascatechinequivalents(5495mgCE100g-1dw)andthehighestantioxidantactivity(DPPH:53.7mmolsTrolox100g-1dw;ABTS:61.6mmolsTrolox100g-1dw).Onthecontrary,thelowestphenolscontent(1540.7mgCE100g-1dw)andthelowestantioxidantactivity(DPPH:13.9mmolsTrolox100g-1dw;ABTS:16.7mmolsTrolox100g-1dw)weredeterminedinthegenotypeMTR7belongingtoZingaropopulation.Theconcentrationoftanninsintheleavesofmyrtleanalyzedrangedfrom78.3mgCE100g-1dwto356.9mgCE100g-1dw,inMRT7ofZingaroandin2MRT6ofMisilmeripopulationsrespectively
